Discussing Astrology Outside Berlin

They were smoking outside of Berlin, a club that's been a fixture on Belmont Ave for as long as I can remember.  The mist all around was turning every vehicular headlight into an eerily moving spotlight, and these guys were huddled together discussing the merits of astrology.

how do you get such clear pics at night? Do you set your camera on something, or do you just have super steady hands? (I am assuming you don't walk around with a tripod all the time). Also, how did you get over taking pictures in public, especially at night? I live in a good city, safe by most standards and yet I can't get over being self conscious about holding up a big ol' camera, especially at night for some reason.
